The DMV & Smog Checks

California takes cars seriously. You have 20 days to register your vehicle and 10 days to get a license. If you wait, the penalties are steep.

  • Smog Check: Unless your car is brand new or electric, you MUST pass a Smog Check before registering. Find a 'Star Certified' station.
  • Real ID: When applying for your license, bring your Passport and 2 proofs of residency to get a Real ID. You'll need it to fly domestic starting 2025.

Taxes: The California Premium

Make no mistake: you pay for the sunshine. California has the highest state income tax brackets in the US (up to 13.3% for high earners).

  • Sales Tax: Varies by city, but averages around 8.8% - 10.25%.
  • Prop 13: If you buy a home, Property Taxes are capped at ~1.1% and can't rise more than 2% a year. This is great for long-term owners but makes entry prices high.

Utilities & PG&E

Electricity is expensive here (often 3x the national average). Most of the state is served by PG&E, SCE, or SDG&E.

  • Time of Use (TOU): Most plans charge WAY more between 4 PM - 9 PM. Run your dishwasher and EV charger after midnight to save money.
