Climate & Weather
The TAVT Tax Shock
Georgia does not charge annual property tax on cars or sales tax on vehicle purchases. Instead, they use the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT). When you move to GA, you must pay a one-time fee (currently around 7%) of the fair market value of your vehicle just to get your plates. This can be a $2,000+ surprise for newer cars.
Department of Driver Services (DDS)
The DMV in Georgia is called the DDS. You have 30 days to get your license. You'll need to surrender your out-of-state license and provide proof of residency. Note: Georgia is a 'Real ID' compliant state, so bring your birth certificate or passport.
Life in the 'Hollywood of the South'
Georgia has become the top location for feature film production globally. Don't be surprised to see yellow 'Base Camp' signs and film crews blocking streets in Atlanta or Covington. This industry has brought a huge influx of creative talent to the state.
