Moving to Maine
"The Pine Tree State"
Maine is a state of raw, rugged beauty and quiet resilience. Known as 'Vacationland', it offers an unparalleled coastline of lighthouses and lobster shacks, along with vast, untamed wilderness in the north. It is a place for those who value privacy, a connection to the season, and a slower-than-average pace of life. While more affordable than many of its New England neighbors, Maine requires a realistic approach to its long, multi-month winters and its specialized system of local 'Excise' taxes.
The Good
- Breathtaking Coastline & National Park access (Acadia)
- Exceptionlly low Crime Rates (consistently top 5 safest)
- World-Class Food & Craft Beer Scene (Portland)
- Proximity to nature from almost any city
The Bad
- Long, Harsh Winters that can isolate rural residents
- Relatively high Income and Property Tax combination
- Demographically older population with slower job growth
- Seasonal economy heavily dependent on tourism

The Excise Tax Sticker
Before you get your 'Chickadee' plates, you must visit your Town Hall and pay an 'Excise Tax'. This is a local tax based on the vehicle's MSRP and its age. Higher-value cars can be hundreds of dollars. You take that town receipt to the BMV to finish the process. Maine law says you must register within 30 days of establishing residency.
Inspection Stickers
Maine is very strict about Safety Inspections. Almost every garage in the state is licensed to do them. They check everything from exhaust leaks to tire tread. Failure to display a valid (current month/year) sticker can lead to frequent traffic stops.
Winter Preparedness
Winter in Maine is a lifestyle, not just a season. Most locals keep 'Ice Melt' and a heavy-duty shovel in their trunk. If you're moving to a rural area, you should ask about 'Mud Season' (the spring thaw), which can make dirt roads impassable for a few weeks.
