Moving to Mississippi
"The Magnolia State"
Mississippi is a land of deep blues music, literary legends, and unhurried hospitality. As the most affordable state in the nation, it allows for a high degree of financial freedom. From the sun-soaked Gulf Coast to the fertile Delta and the college-town energy of Oxford, Mississippi offers a warm climate and a culture that values tradition and family. Just be prepared for the 'steamy' summers and the annual tax on vehicle ownership.
The Good

Climate & Weather
The Ad Valorem Tax
Why are car tags more expensive in the cheapest state? Mississippi uses an Ad Valorem Tax to fund local schools and roads. This annual tax is based on the value of your car. For a newer vehicle, your first registration can be $300-$600. However, the state offers 'Legislative Credit' that reduces this amount for primary residents.
The Blues & The Beach
Life in Mississippi is about the pace. In the Delta, it's about the history of the Blues. On the Gulf Coast, it's about white sand beaches and a surprisingly vibrant casino and seafood scene. It's a state where 'Southern Comfort' isn't just a drinkβit's a way of interacting with your neighbors.
The DPS Process
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) handles driver's licenses. Note that unlike other states, their offices are often separate from the tax collector (where you get plates). Be sure to check which office you need before driving out!
