Moving to Montana

"The Big Sky Country"

Montana is the 'Last Best Place' for a reason. Offering a scale of natural beauty that is difficult to process—from the jagged crown of the continent at Glacier National Park to the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone—it is a state defined by its wide-open spaces and its fiercely independent spirit. While the 'Big Sky' offers unparalleled freedom and zero sales tax, it also demands resilience: winters can be bone-chillingly severe, and a recent population boom has sent housing prices skyrocketing in its most desirable mountain towns.

  • Severely cold and long Winters (-30°F is possible)
  • Rapidly Rising Housing Costs (Bozeman/Missoula metros)
  • Significant physical Isolation from major metro services

The 11-Year Rule

Montana offers a unique perk: if your vehicle is 11 years old or older, you can pay a one-time fee for Permanent Registration. You never have to renew your tags or pay registration fees again as long as you own that vehicle. It’s a huge incentive for keeping older, reliable mountain trucks.

The Treasurer is the DMV

Vehicles are registered at the County Treasurer's office, not a state DMV building. Most counties now allow you to schedule an appointment online. Be sure to bring your out-of-state title; Montana requires the physical title to complete a transfer.

Winter Readiness 101

Moving here means learning about 'Winterizing' everything. Most homes use wood stoves or propane for heat. You will need to learn how to keep your pipes from freezing and how to drive on 'Black Ice'. A good set of winter tires (not just all-seasons) is considered essential equipment for 6 months of the year.
