The Dreaded 'Car Tax'
Virginia is one of the few states that charges an annual Personal Property Tax on vehicles. Every year, your county or city will send you a bill based on the value of your car. This can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars annually. Budget for this like you would a second insurance payment.
Reckless Driving Warning
Virginia takes speeding very seriously. Anything over 85 mph, or 20 mph over the limit, can be charged as Reckless Driving, which is a Class 1 Misdemeanor (a criminal offense, not just a ticket). Also, Radar Detectors are strictly illegal here.
The DMV & REAL ID
The Virginia DMV is generally efficient but busy. You are required to obtain a 'REAL ID' or the standard license. If you want a REAL ID, make sure you bring your physical Social Security card and birth certificate/passport.
