Moving to Washington

"The Evergreen State"

Washington is more than just rain and coffee. It's a technological powerhouse with some of the most spectacular, rugged nature in the world. From the tech hubs of Seattle and Bellevue to the high desert of the East, the state offers a unique deal: zero state income tax in exchange for some of the highest sales taxes in the nation. Prepare for the 'Big Dark' (winter) but enjoy the endless summers.

Zero Income Tax, High Sales Tax

Washington is one of the few states with No State Income Tax. To fund the state, sales taxes are high (often 10%+ in Seattle). Additionally, if you live in the Sound Transit (RTA) district, your vehicle registration fees will be significantly higher to fund light rail expansion.

Department of Licensing (DOL)

In WA, it's the DOL, not the DMV. To get your license, you'll need to establish residency first. Unlike other states, you often register your car at private 'Quick Title' offices or county auditor offices, which are separate from where you get your driver's license.

Surviving 'The Big Dark'

From November to March, Western Washington is chronically gray. It doesn't always rain hard, but it's constantly overcast. Many residents take Vitamin D and use 'Happy Lights' to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The payoff is July through September, which are arguably the most beautiful months anywhere in the world.
