Moving to West Virginia

"The Mountain State"

John Denver wasn't lying: West Virginia is 'Almost Heaven'. Offering some of the most dramatic and rugged mountain scenery in the East, it is a haven for those who seek a quiet, rural life or world-class outdoor adventure (specifically whitewater rafting and rock climbing). While the state's economy has long been tied to energy and coal, its newer status as home to the nation's newest National Park—New River Gorge—is fueling a tourism and remote-work renaissance in places like Fayetteville and Shepherdstown.

The Tax Waiver Step

Before you can get plates at the DMV, you must visit your County Assessor. Because you haven't lived in WV previously, you owe no back-taxes, but the DMV requires a 'Tax Waiver' from the Assessor to prove it. Without this paper, you will be sent away and have to start over.

Mandatory Safety Stickers

West Virginia requires an annual Safety Inspection. You will see a small sticker on the bottom-center of every windshield. Any licensed mechanic can do it for a small state-mandated fee. They check tires, brakes, lights, and signals. Note: This is separate from registration; the sticker is the proof.

Topography & Travel

Life in WV is measured in minutes, not miles. A 10-mile drive can take 30 minutes due to winding mountain roads. During winter, a 4WD or AWD vehicle is not just a luxury—it's often a necessity for navigating secondary roads and steep driveways.
